The Gulden is back as virtual currency (!)

Last night I paid for my dinner with Guldens. No, this is not an article from 2001 and the old Gulden is not returned, but the newfangled Gulden is there. (Guldens were the currency of the Netherlands before the Euro took over.) Just awesome what the developers of Gulden created!

The Gulden is an initiative of Dutch developers and can be seen as the Dutch Bitcoin. The coin is for sale with PayPal and money transfer to an IBAN address with the Gulden app is a breeze.

Wallet and receive

The Gulden app is for iOS, Android, Mac and Windows. The mobile apps are the easiest to use. You start by creating a wallet with address. At this address you can receive payments and make transfers. Your address is displayed as QR code and as a combination of letters and numbers. Someone can transfer Guldens to you by scanning the QR code with the app, or by typing in the address.

From the app it isn’t clear where Guldens (NLG) are for sale, but this is possible from gulden.com with iDeal (Dutch PayPal). The transaction is governed by a Dutch company and enter personal information is required. At time of writing € 10 worth about NLG 4240.

Payments

Of course you cannot do anything with (virtual) money accept from spending it on something. This app is conveniently arranged. There are a number of stores and shops that accept direct Guldens, including Subway branches (find an overview at pay.gulden.com). From the payment screen of the app is also possible to transfer directly to a Gulden Bitcoin address or IBAN. You must first copy the address, and then it will appear in the app.

You can even order a meal at thuisbezorg.nl (food delivery service) with easy checkout.

Another great Dutch initiative in my opinion!
