Self Destruct Sunshine Belmont Stakes Showers Likely

This morning starts of with a much smaller area of clearing and a much larger area of clouds. Today is the kind of day where we have "self destruct sunshine". The air mass is unstable so the strong June sun goes to work on the cold unstable air and you get clouds to develop. It really becomes self defeating because as the sun breaks through the clouds, more clouds form. Sometimes you can get some instability showers to develop. We saw that and more yesterday and last night in parts of Central and South Jersey with thunderstorms. I don't think we see that today since this seems to be a weaker upper air disturbance rotating through. The chance for a passing brief shower however remains. It will be coole today as well with highs just in the upper 60s and lower 70s.

The satellite picture this morning shows the cloud cover around us. This is all thanks to a strong upper low in New Brunswick Canada with a trough that extends southwestward over us. It will be very slow to get out of the way and some remnants of it will still be around for Thursday. Radars are quiet this morning. I'm expecting much less activity today as compared to yesterday.

Thursday is looking okay with a mix of sun and clouds with highs in the 70s. Friday will be the warm day this week with a mix of sun and clouds again and highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s. This takes us into the weekend with another dicey forecast thanks to the next frontal boundary that will be dropping southward from the Great Lakes.

SATURDAY FORECAST JUSTIFY GETS A SLOP FEST?

Self Destruct Sunshine Belmont Stakes Showers Likely

The next frontal boundary for Saturday comes in time for the Belmont Stakes and weather models are trending to a wetter look here though I don't necessarily think it will be a washout and it won't be like the rains of Louisville for the Kentucky Derby (3 inches) or the Preakness (7 inches over a couple of days). I would think it will be more showery in nature and perhaps the heavier rains will hold off until Saturday night. Still some showers are likely at some point during the day Saturday with temperatures in the 70s. It might also set the stage for improving weather conditions on Sunday with some early morning clouds and leftover showers gradually giving way to sunshine and temperatures in the 70s.

As for Justify a wet track certainly plays into his hands though he did draw post position 1 which is not a good spot to be if you want to get out on the lead. At the end of the day if he is the horse to pull off the Triple Crown he will have to overcome every challenge in front of him to get the mile and a half that is Belmont.
