Bacurau - 2019 - The new phase of Brazilian cinema // A nova fase do cinema brasileiro

To say that Bacurau is the new phase of Brazilian cinema may seem like a misinformation, because only those who have been absent from the "movie theaters" in the last 10 years can think that. The fact is, Bacurau kind of closed this cycle of growth, the maturity of Brazilian cinema. Undoubtedly, it is worth remembering that we had a large number of impeccable, iconic films that set up the current identity of Brazilian cinema, such as: O silêncio do céu, O lobo atrás da porta, O som ao redor, Que horas ela volta, Aquarius, among others. Everyone deserves space here at Cine and I hope to write about them as soon as possible. But today I will talk specifically about the film that practically closed the cinema with the necessary brutality before the pandemic took the course it took.

Bacurau is a tiny city that, by the way, seems to have disappeared from the map, as a professor notes when trying to show students the location of the small town. An important resident of 94 years passes away, and her wake starts the plot, showing how intense and ritualistic this mourning ritual is in some corners of Brazil, naturally with all the lyricism necessary to accentuate the cultural textures in the cinema. The city has countless intriguing and unique figures, making a kind of fable with the archetypes living there. Things start to take strange paths when some incidents bring insecurity to Bacurau. Faced with the growing need for surveillance and then fighting, the residents of Bacurau will be ready for any situation. Unfortunately, I cannot give too many details of the script so as not to spoil the countless surprises that will be on the way of the viewer.

Kleber Mendonça Filho, the brilliant director behind this work brought together a vast universe of cultural representations and also clear influences, besides giving textures and a surreal tone to this almost dreamlike northeastern reality. In spite of using an initially basic garment in Brazilian cinema, it is misleading anyone who thinks that this is an adventure that took place in the confines of Brazil. Bacurau transforms and grows as the minutes go by. For a good observer, the introduction of the film is clear enough to show that it will not be a "traditional" film. It ended up that, like everything in Brazil in these last 5 years lived, the film became a political discussion, but, regardless of opinions and views, if there is something not to be missed in these last 10 years, Bacurau is undoubtedly the first on the list. Be ready for a half Tarantino, half psychedelic, acid, sarcastic, original and very violent journey.
