Chapter 3
The first tests
Before Edwin Schnauzer arrived in India, many other white men had gone there. They said they were Christians. But they were not in India for love of Christ. They were in India for the love of gold. These people did not want Edwin to preach the Gospel to the Indians. They were afraid that preaching would harm their business. And for them their business was more important than the salvation of the Indians.

That's why Edwin passed a lot of tests. His wife and son became seriously ill. He had no money to feed himself. His son died, and had to bury him himself, because no one wanted to help him. His wife went crazy. The doctor who had come with him was filled with debts and had to leave him.
Although the Indians paid attention when preached to them, none were converted. The English authorities wanted Edwin to abandon his purpose of preaching to the Indians. But Edwin was a man of faith. And faith produces trust. And trust produces value. That is why he wrote to his friends in England:
"My position is no longer possible...
There are difficulties everywhere...
Therefore, we must move forward."
The trials along the way had only served to strengthen their faith. The trials of the Christian strengthen his faith.
