History of BMW M1
The M1 Program started in the middle of 70's to compete against Porsche in the World Sportscar Championship and also during the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Firstly, the development was contracted first with Lamborghini to build the car. But some problems between BMW and the Italian car manufacturer put an end to this collaboration, BMW taking over the project alone. But Italy remains present in this car...
The bodywork in fiberglass was designed by ItalDesign, Italian development services for the transportation industry with the Italian designer, Giorgetto Giugiaro.
The body and interior was assembled in Italy and then Karosserie Baur added the engine at Stuttgart (Germany). The final step was BMW Motorsports for final preparation and distribution. Despite these challenges, the BMW M1 was presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1978.
But the competition, Group 5 Silhouette Formula, in which the car was to participate has changed the rules. Production nonetheless continued and BMW participate to the Group 4.
Specification
The BMW M1 is equipped of a 3.5-litre six engine with a twin-overhead-cam and four valves per cylinder producing 277 hp. The car can reach a top speed 260 kmh, the fastest German sport car at this time.
M1 is standing for the first car built by BMW Motorsport GmbH, subsidiary of German car manufacturer BMW founded in 1972. Only 453 examples had been built (399 road cars and 54 Procars - race cars).
So 80's, ready to be behind the wheel ?
