Welcome to another day of the #botanicalgardentours. As it is #treetuesday, today I want to present to you the Pinus Peuce, also known as the Macedonian or Balkan Pine.
Herzlich willkommen zu einem weiteren Tag mit den #botanicalgardentours. Da heute #treetuesday ist möchte ich euch den Pinus Peuce vorstellen, der auch als Rumelische Kiefer bekannt ist.
The pine is native to mountains of the southern Balkan Peninsula as well as parts of northern Macedonia, Bulgaria and Greece and can be found in hights between 800 m and 2200 m. In higher mountain ranges the tree reach heights about 15 m, while in lower regions even heights of 30 m are possible. The branches are usually quite short, thick and bare, while the younger shoots are a bit greenish, bare and appear shiny. The stiff needles have a gray-green colour tone and are about 10 cm long and can stay at the tree for up to three years. The buds are up to 10 mm long, narrow and resiniferous and the blossom is between may and june. The cones are approximately 12 cm long, very short-stalked and are either laterally projecting or hanging. The bark is smooth and silver gray in the beginning and becomes darker and rough with age. In the end the bark becomes cracked and flakes starts to peel off.
Die Kiefer stammt ursprünglich aus Bergen der südlichen Balkanhalbinsel sowie Teilen Nordmakedoniens, Bulgariens und Griechenlands und ist in Höhen zwischen 800 m und 2200 m zu finden. In höheren Gebirgsregionen erreicht der Baum eine Höhe von ca. 15 m, in tieferen Regionen sind sogar Höhen von 30 m möglich. Die Zweige sind meist recht kurz, dick und kahl, während die jüngeren Triebe etwas grünlich, kahl und glänzend erscheinen. Die steifen Nadeln haben einen graugrünen Farbton und sind ca. 10 cm lang und können bis zu drei Jahre am Baum bleiben. Die Knospen sind bis zu 10 mm lang, schmal und harzig und die Blüte ist zwischen Mai und Juni. Die Zapfen sind ca. 12 cm lang, sehr kurz gestielt und stehen entweder seitlich hervor oder hängen. Die Rinde ist am Anfang glatt und silbergrau und wird mit zunehmendem Alter dunkler und rauer. Am Ende reißt die Rinde und löst sich schuppig ab.
