Most book lovers share two dreams: the first to be able to enter into the books they read and take up residence where created characters, and their stories, have made their mark on imagination's wandering and , the second, for these characters to jump off the pages and live in this world as friends < or more ;) >. Inkheart is a tale of a family whose members, Meggie and her father Mo, are unintentionally capable of BOTH these dreams but, as with with most magical abilities, it comes at the price of an even trade between the world of words and this one we live in. Tragically, one of the first of these trades results in the loss of Maggie's mother and two pets for two antagonists and a entertaining fire-player named Dustfinger and what's worse, Mo doesn't know how to read the characters back into the book while returning the same persons from the first exchange out of the book called Inkheart. After ten years of living in hiding as a book binder and restorer, Maggie and Mo are found by Dustfinger who is desperate to get back into his story, Inkheart, and all of them, including the author of Inheart, are captured by the main antagonist Capricorn who wants to make sure that he can stay in this world and attain power by having his pet weapon read out of the book. Can Meggie change the story?

This is definitely a book that should be read by any book lover and any writer of fictional works as it creatively considers the consequences of characters being read in and out of books and takes into account how the reader thinks while reading. In addition, as the main character are tested in their reading skills this story also touches on other books written by others like Peter Pan and Arabian Nights. This is definitely considered a teen/young adult book so it's an easy read but I highly recommend it solely based on the creative merit of the plot-line which I found highly enjoyable and I admired how Funke made sure that the persons/creatures read out of the books maintained their character even while out of place. Keep in mind that this is the first book in a series of three so expect questions at the which will lead on to the next book. They did end up making a film adaptation but, as usual, the book is better. :) Which characters do you wish you could read out of a book and who/what would you consider an even trade?
