No recuerdo cuando fue la primera vez que escuché el apodo "Chente". Al menos, no sé en qué momento mis amigos empezaron a usarlo conmigo. Pero si recuerdo haber escuchado con mucha fecuencia el "¡Échale Chente!" en varias canciones de Vicente Fernández y sus hijos. Supongo que al tener el mismo nombre, fue bastante obvio para mis amigos llamarme así.
Nunca fui un escucha muy asiduo de la música mexicana, pero mi hermano mayor sí. De hecho, era un fan irrestricto de la cultura mexicana. Recuerdo que siempre tenia cajas llenas de peliculas en CD y DVD de Pedro Infante, Marga López, Pedro Armendáriz, Mario Moreno (Cantinflas), entre otros cuyos nombres nunca aprendí. También viajaba mucho y no faltaban las rancheras en su reproductor. No puedo escuchar "El chofer" sin inevitablemente pensar en él.

I don't remember when I first heard the nickname "Chente". At least I don't know when my friends started using it on me. But I do remember hearing the "¡Échale Chente!" in several songs by Vicente Fernández and his sons. I guess having the same name, it was pretty obvious to my friends to called me like that.
I was never a very regular listener of Mexican music, but my older brother was. In fact, he was an unrestricted fan of Mexican culture. I remember that he always had boxes full of movies on CD and DVD by Pedro Infante, Marga López, Pedro Armendáriz, Mario Moreno (Cantinflas), among others whose names I never learned. He also traveled a lot and rancheras were not lacking in his player. I can't listen to "El chofer" without inevitably thinking about him.
Pero a lo que nos atañe. Tan misterioso es para mí el principio este apodo en mi vida como el comienzo de mi amor por el contrabajo.
Para quienes no tengan idea de lo que es un contrabajo, es ese instrumento grande y rechoncho que suele estar a un costado de las orquestas o suele ser obligatorio en los grupos Jazz. Pero que también está presente en tantos géneros musicales como la Salsa, el tango, el bluegrass, etc.
But what concerns us. The beginning of this nickname in my life is as mysterious to me as the beginning of my love for the double bass.
For those who have no idea what a double bass is, it is that big and plump instrument that is usually on the side of orchestras or is usually mandatory in Jazz groups. But it is also present in so many musical genres such as Salsa, tango, bluegrass, etc.
No digo que no recuerde cuando fué la primera vez que toqué uno. De hecho, tengo ese día muy grabado en mi memoria. Básicamente, porque las personas con las que comparto ese momento exacto ya no están en este mundo. Bueno, no es mi intensión ser demasiado dramático... Pero sí, de hecho, ambos ya han fallecido.
El primero de ellos, César, estudió conmigo en la primaria durante varios años. Quiso adentrarse en el mundo de la música impulsado por la misma curiosidad que yo. Lamentablemente, dejó los estudios, la música y se dedicó a la vida de un delincuente, donde perdió la vida. Los sordidos detalles de su muerte, aunque los conozco, prefiero reservarmelos.
La segunda persona en este recuerdo fue alguien a quién le guardo un aprecio y una admiración indescriptible. Aún me siento con mucho remordimiento, pues durante los momentos más difíciles de su enfermedad, no estuve tan presente como debí haber estado. Era una de las personas más abnegadas que he conocido en mi vida. Su perseverancia, inventiva, paciencia, diligencia, fortaleza y entrega para con todos los niños y jóvenes que ayudó a integrarse al mundo de la música en nuestro pueblo tiene poca comparación en toda la historia de sus más de trecientos años de fundado. Siempre me motivó a dar lo mejor y más. A ayudar y estar dispuesto a sacrificar cada gota de esfuerzo en la persecución de mis objetivos. A ayudar a crecer a otros desinteresadamente y pensar en un futuro mejor para tods. Hoy no soy la mitad de lo que ella llegó a ser como persona.

I'm not saying I don't remember when I first played one. In fact, I have that day very etched in my memory. Basically, because the people with whom I share that exact moment are no longer in this world. Well, it is not my intention to be too dramatic ... But yes, in fact, both of them have already passed away.
The first of them, Cesar, studied with me in elementary school for several years. He wanted to enter the world of music driven by the same curiosity as me. Unfortunately, he left his studies, music and dedicated himself to the life of a criminal, where he lost his life. The sordid details of his death, although I know them, I prefer to reserve for me.
The second person in this memory was someone for whom I have indescribable appreciation and admiration. I still feel very remorseful, because during the most difficult moments of her illness, I was not as present as I should have been. She was one of the most self-sacrificing people I have ever met. Her perseverance, inventiveness, patience, diligence, strength and dedication to all the children and young who she helped integrate into the world of music in our town has no comparison in the entire history of its more than three hundred years of foundation. She always motivated me to give my best and more. To help and be willing to sacrifice every drop of effort in the pursuit of my goals. To help others grow selflessly and think about a better future for everyone. Today I am not half of what she became as a person.

Ese día cuando estaba en la oficina de inscripción de la Orquesta Sinfónica de mi pueblo y la única opción disponible era el contrabajo. A pesar de llamar mucho la atención por sus dimensiones no gozaba de la popularidad del violín o el cello. Pero acepté, de todas formas "no sabía ni tocar las maracas", me dije (ignorando lo dificíl que puede llegar a ser).
En todo caso, ese día empezó mi relación con el contrabajo en el mundo sinfónico. Luego vino mi incursión en la música tradicional venezolana, donde descubrí el peso fundamental que este instrumento agrega a los valses venezolano, el ritmo al merengue, la fuerza al joropo, la modernidad a la onda nueva y el sabor a la gaita. Justo después mi mundo se expandió y conocí el jazz, la salsa y el tango. Hoy estoy en cortejo con el choro brasileño y el bluegrass.
Con este instrumento he iniciado varios proyectos musicales de los que estoy orgulloso y me ha traido las mejores de mis dichas. He conocido gente increible y he aprendido mucho.
That day when I was at the registration office of the Symphony Orchestra of my town, the only option available was the double bass. Despite attracting much attention for its size, it did not enjoy the popularity of the violin or the cello. But I accepted, anyway "I didn't even know how to play the maracas", I told myself (ignoring how difficult it can be).
In any case, that day began my relationship with the double bass in the symphonic world. Then came my foray into traditional Venezuelan music, where I discovered the fundamental weight that this instrument adds to the Venezuelan waltzes, the rhythm to the merengue, the strength to the joropo, the modernity to the onda nueva and the flavor of the gaitas. Right after, my world expanded and I got to know jazz, salsa and tango. Today I am in courtship with the Brazilian woolly and bluegrass.
With this instrument I have started several musical projects of which I am proud and it has brought me the best of joys. I have met amazing people and I have learned a lot.
Lo mejor de todo, es que sus posibilidades aún son tan vastas, que aún me queda mucho por aprender y experimentar.
Por eso, me acompaña en mi nombre de usuario en todas las plataformas. Porque no logro concebirme a mi mismo sin este maravilloso instrumento.
