Investigating Miracles Attributed to Gotama Buddha

Teacher David,

I used https://chatgpt.com to lookup a list of miracles performed by Gotoma Buddha in the Pali Canon.

I don't really understand the references but it says it's directly from the Pali Canon, not just the commentary.

Are these credible examples of miracles performed by Gotoma Buddha? Or is it possible I am citing non-Canon sources?

I'm asking and sharing this to investigate and see if there is any evidence Gotoma Buddha performed more than one miracle.

Thank you, Teacher.

  1. Walking on water / Vinaya Piṭaka (Cullavagga 5.8)
  2. Flying through the air / Samyutta Nikāya 51.11 (Iddhipāda-Vibhanga Sutta)
  3. Anguttara Nikāya 3.60 (Loṇa-phala Sutta)
  4. Multiplying his body / Anguttara Nikāya 3.60 (Loṇa-phala Sutta)
  5. Reading others' thoughts / Majjhima Nikāya 91 (Brahmāyu Sutta)
  6. Dīgha Nikāya 1 (Brahmajāla Sutta)
  7. Healing the sick / Vinaya Piṭaka (Mahāvagga 8.26.1)
  8. Samyutta Nikāya 47.19 (Gilāna Sutta)

Teacher David replies.

Hello Chris…sure, I will help you.

The Buddha did not perform all these miracles. It is untrue.

He only ever performed one miracle and that was, just prior to him sharing his first Teaching of The Four Noble Truths.

The Buddha called many animals to come to him by just touching the earth.

This was performed in front of his first 5 Students. Then, after that, he did not perform any other miracles.

A Buddha does not perform several miracles. They do not attempt to get others to know that they are a Buddha.

Their Teachings are independently verifiable and they do not need others to know they are a Buddha to be successful at sharing their Teachings with others to guide them to Enlightenment.

In fact, it is better if people do not know who a Buddha is. Then, they can be more effective at helping Students by The Buddha understanding their Student's mind and sharing Teachings that will help them.

PS - AI may not be as intelligent as people give it credit for.... 🙂 🙂 🙂
