Time To Add Your Teenager To Your Auto Insurance?? Yikes!!

So I had to face this while helping my daughter add her teenage son. So I did some checking around and thought I'd pass on some tips that I was able to dig up. There are various ways to go about getting your 17 year old car insurance. Follow the steps below to help you get cheap car insurance for a seventeen year old or even a 16 year old.

  • Include the 17 year old on the parents' insurance policy - Instead of getting the 17 year old a car insurance policy of his/her own, include them on their parents policy. This tends to be cheaper than the alternative.
  • Take a driving course and do well - The 16 or 17 year old should take a drivers' ed course and do well in it. Many insurance companies will give better rates for 17 year olds who have taken drivers' courses and get good grades.
  • Get good grades in school - If the 16 or 17 year old gets good grades in school, this can also lower the insurance rate. Many insurance companies consider seventeen year old with good grades less of a risk and therefore give them better rates. Promoted by
  • Choose your car type carefully - If you want to get a 17 year old car insurance that is cheap or at least low cost and affordable, be sure to choose the car for the 17 year old carefully. Older cars and cars with more safety features are cheaper to insure than newer cars and sports cars.
  • Make sure the 17 year old drives responsibly - Any small car accident, ticket or traffic violation can increase the car insurance for a 17 year old drastically. So be sure the 17 year old is aware of this and drives carefully and safely. As the 16 or 17 year old gets older, the insurance rate will become lower as long as their driving record is clear.
  • Choose a higher deductible - Normally, if you have an insurance policy with a higher deductible, you will have a lower premium.
  • Shop around - Look into different insurance policies and don't just settle for the first one you find. Find which insurance policy offers the cheapest insurance for a 17 year old. Ask specific questions regarding your specific circumstances (including the 17 year olds' grades, type of car, driving record, etc.)
