I don't know if this is a fair statement. IceFrog, the lead designer behind DotA 2, has kept his identity as a mask for years, with only a small group of professional players, Valve employees, and commentators knowing who he really is. There is conjecture based on "evidence" but it is still nothing more than guesses about who he is, with very little being certain.
If a person wants to keep their identity a secret, I don't think it's totally unreasonable for them to be able to do so if they are careful.
