It is a huge advantage to know what your skin undertone is when shopping for some new foundation or clothing. For me, shopping for new foundation always felt like a dreadful task, because I didn't know how to choose the right foundation shade and half of the make up assistance at drug stores knows less than I do.

I made it my mission to learn more about skin undertones an which category of undertones I fall under so that I don't find myself clueless when spending my hard earned cash on new foundations.

Skin Undertones Explained

The undertone of your skin can be explained as simply being the color that's beneath your skin. Your undertone can never change even if your skin tone changes due to sun exposure. You may have the same skin color as your friend, for example, but it doesn't mean that you have the same undertone. Skin undertones can be broken down into three different categories, namely Cool, Neutral and Warm tones.

How to determine your skin undertone

Here are a few tips and tricks to help you determine whether you are cool, neutral or warm toned:

Cool Undertones:

• When you have a pink, red or blueish cast to your skin
• If you check your veins on your wrist and your veins are predominantly blue
• When silver jewelry looks better on you rather than gold jewelry
• Typically when your natural eye color is green, blue or grey
• When you're out in the sun and you burn, your skin turns red or pink

Neutral Undertones:

• When you have neither red/pink/blue/yellow/gold cast to your skin, but rather a mixture of them
• If you check you veins on your wrist and your veins appear blue-green
• When you are able to rock both silver & gold jewelry

*people with neutral undertones should consider themselves lucky, because they are not restricted or limited to only a few shades

Warm Undertones:

• When you have a green cast to your skin
• When your veins on your wrist appears more green than blue
• When gold jewelry flatters your skin more than silver jewelry
• Usually when you have brown, hazel or amber eye color
• When you're out in the sun and your skin tans a golden brown color

Do not be fooled by thinking that only pale/fair skin women have cool tones. Or that only dark skinned women have warm undertones. In fact, dark skin girls have cool tones an fair skin girls have warm undertones as well.
