Particle Dance

I think I'll just start sharing short videos instead of gifs for some of my animation stuff. The gifs end up having to be way too compressed.

Anyway, this is a little animation I made a while back with a setup that I'd figured out where I could spread an attribute accross some particles in a cool way. Basically the way it works is there are some invisible particles that are emitting "temperature" which acts sort of like heat in that one particles value increases and the surrounding particles value is affected as it gets "hotter". So in CG all this information is actually just numbers and values being modified so I can take that information and map it to anything I want. For instance in this case the particle color. The dark purple particles are the ones that are "cold" and the heat wave comes and heats them up but then they start to cool off after the initial wave. In the head example from the video these values are mapped to the particle color as well as their scale. Which is why it looks like they appear from nowhere.

The end result is pretty cool looking and there's a lot that could be done with it by mapping those values to other attributes or having them drive other animation or changes. Fun stuff. Hope it's not too confusing. Thanks for looking peeps!
