Life in Vietnam as an expat

Things are pretty great here right now. The weather is as great as it is going to be and it almost feels like the beginning of autumn back in my home country of USA. During the day it is sunny most of the time, but not crazy hot and in the evenings it gets down to jacket and jeans weather.

So this is a wonderful time to walk around and check out some scenery and look for things that make this country unique and at times humorous.

This first thing is a bit funny to me because I am not very clear as to why they felt like this needed to be in English in the first place. Why they decided to not have it edited by someone who actually speaks the language makes it even funnier. The best part is that according to my friend, the "114" emergency number is not the number you call for the Fire Department anyway.

It's a nice message and I agree with the sentiment. They nearly got it all spelled correctly too so I give them points for trying. You can find a lot of these in Vietnam and basically all the surrounding south east asian countries as well.

Next up we have some trash. My favorite kind of art is street art and that is NOT what this is. Presumably because the people didn't have permission and the authorities have very harsh penalties for vandalism in Vietnam, we don't really have a lot of good street art but instead we have these lazy gang tags that I hate even when they are done well. This one sucks and was probably done in a hurry. The fact that it is on the wall of a church just made me angry too and I am not even a religious person.

Last up we have this gem. This only recently became street art because the wall there used to be on the interior of a cafe / bar that was torn down because of a lack of customers. This is primarily because of Covid of course and it is kind of sad. None of this is spray work, but it is a nice mish-mash of colors and what have you. I hope that no one takes over the property soon because they will almost certainly paint right over it.

That's it for now folks, I hope your holidays are treating you well. Have a fantastic day.
