What is the Dalai Lama?
The Dalai Lama is the leading spiritual teacher and political figure of Tibetan Buddhism, and is considered to be the incarnation of the bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokiteśvara. The name "Dalai Lama" means "ocean" or "great master," and the title has been held by a succession of Tibetan leaders for centuries. The current Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is the 14th in the line of succession and lives in India as a refugee. His role has been to represent and unify the Tibetan state, and he has worked to overcome sectarian and other divisions in the exiled community.
The Dalai Lama is supposed to be a reincarnation of masters and is a monumentally important figure for Buddhist teaching, religion and other sects.
