The lion (Panthera leo) is one of the big cats in the genus Panthera and a member of the family Felidae. The commonly used term African lion collectively denotes the several subspecies found in Africa. With some males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight,[4] it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in sub-Saharan Africa and in India (where an endangered remnant population resides in Gir Forest National Park). In ancient historic times, their range was in most of Africa, including North Africa, and across Eurasia from Greece and southeastern Europe to India. In the late Pleistocene, about 10,000 years ago, the lion was the most widespread large land mammal after humans: Panthera leo spelaea lived in northern and western Europe and Panthera leo atrox lived in the Americas from the Yukon to Peru.[5] The lion is classified as a vulnerable species by the IUCN, having seen a major population decline in its African range of 30–50% per two decades during the second half of the twentieth century.[2] Lion populations are untenable outside designated reserves and national parks. Although the cause of the decline is not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are the greatest causes of concern. Within Africa, the West African lion population is particularly endangered.

Looking for the Lonely Lion series episode 6

… Continued from episode 5. As the Caring Camel galloped furiously ahead, with the kids barely able to hold onto his hump, to reach the Lonely Lion well before sunset, they passed through the watch-your-back land :-S The Caring Camel asked them to be totally silent to avoid the attention of the predators. As they moved silently ahead, they spotted at a distance the Jumpy Jackal (Golden Jackal) glancing backwards every few seconds while drinking water. After a while they passed by the Chary Chital (Spotted Deer) as she kept staring backwards while grazing grass. By then even the kids had started glancing backwards to check if anyone was stalking them :-S To be concluded in episode 7 …

During the peak summer months, many natural watering holes in the Gir Forest area tend to dry up. Hence a number of artificial watering holes have been constructed and are replenished regularly during this period. These two photos of the Gir Forest wildlife were taken during a summer morning/evening safari from the confines of the safari vehicle, using handheld 23x/17x zoom respectively. The Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary in India’s Gujarat state is the sole home of the Asiatic Lion (Panthera Leo Persica) subspecies. The ecosystem of Gir, with its diverse flora and fauna, is considered to be one of the most important protected areas in Asia.

The world's most social felines, lions usually get by with a little help from their pride mates.

Lions have strong, compact bodies and powerful forelegs, teeth, and jaws for pulling down and killing prey. Their coats are yellow-gold. Adult males have shaggy manes that range in color from blond to reddish-brown to black, and length. The length and color of the mane is believed to be determined by such factors as age, genetics, and hormones. Young lions have light spotting on their coats that will disappear as they grow up.

Male lions grow larger than females, reaching up to ten feet long (females reach up to nine feet long), plus a two- to three-foot-long tail. Male lions weigh from 330 to 550 pounds; females weigh 265 to 395 pounds. Lions stand between three and a half and four feet tall at the shoulder.

Except for a small population that hangs on in the dry Gir Forest of northwest India, lions now live only in Africa. They are found from the Sahara's southern fringe to northern South Africa, but are absent from equatorial areas dominated by moist tropical forest.

Renowned for its majesty and nicknamed "the king of the jungle," the lion possesses both beauty and strength. Lions vary in color but typically sport light yellow-brown coats. Mature male lions are unique among big cats due the thick brown or black manes that encircle their necks and protect them while fighting.

Lions consume a wide variety of prey, from wildebeest, impala, zebra, giraffe, buffalo and wild hogs to sometimes rhinos and hippos. They will also feed on smaller animals such as hares, birds and reptiles. Lions are also known to attack elephants when food is scarce.

The lion population in Africa has been reduced by half since the early 1950s. Today, fewer than 21,000 remain in all of Africa. Though lions used to live in most parts of Africa, they are now found only in the south Sahara desert and in parts of southern and eastern Africa. Historically, in addition to Africa, lions were found from Greece through the Middle East to northern India.

Both male and female lions roar, and that roar can be heard over five miles away! The only social member of the cat (Felidae) family, lions live in large groups called "prides, " consisting of about 15 lions. Related females and their young make up the majority of the pride. A single male, or sometimes a small group of 2-3 males, will join a pride for an indefinite period, usually about 3 years or until another group of males takes over.

Lions within a pride are often affectionate and, when resting, seem to enjoy good fellowship with lots of touching, head rubbing, licking and purring. The males are territorial, and will roar and use scent markings to establish their domains.

24//52 Percy Lion at Alnwick Castle
By: NikkiNakkiNoo365
What could be more British than a lion, a castle and a Union Jack (and grey sky)!

The is The Percy Lion which is perched on the Lion Bridge crossing the River Aln north of Alnwick, Northumberland.
Northumberland is reputed to have more castles and towers than any other county in Britain. Alnwick, Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh to name but a few. Not only this, but the Northumberland countryside is stunning, and boasts a beautiful coastline - a natural beauty too, not built up and heavily commercialised as many seaside locations have become and definitely one worth visiting with your camera.

As for Percy, he has not gone without mishap - in the 1980s the whole statue was plunged into the river when a truck crashed into the bridge. Also, on one occasion a boy sat on the lion's tail and the tail snapped off. Both the tail and the boy fell into the river below.

Sekhmet Artistic Portrait: Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum

Sekhmet Artistic Portrait: Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum
By: Life_After_Death - Shannon Day
An artistic portrait of the large statue of the Royal Egyptian goddess Sekhmet.

She is the healer and warrior; a perfect example of balance - or "maat" as they call it in ancient Egypt, or "yin and yang" as some call it in other cultures: severity with kindness, gentleness with strength. This photo is probably my personal favorite, so far. Being my favorite challenge in the museum, I expect to take more. :)

This is one of the more interesting rooms in the museum as it is designed around the dimensions and orientation, as well as the actual lighting that would be in the ancient Egyptian temples, such as ones devoted to Sekhmet herself. Gives one a chance to step back in time. :)

I just took a tour of the museum. I have been coming for years, but I never took the tour. If you get a chance to take the tour, I highly recommend it. I learned so much! If you do go, you would be lucky to have a person like our tour guide, Jasmine, to take you around. Thank you, Jasmine! :) - Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum in San jose, CA.
