Hello welcome to my blog. This is my participation to the Amazing Nature Community's thematic challenge, called "surprise".
I choose this post to share it in this challenge because this was one of the times that one of our plants gave us a grateful surprise
About ten years ago my husband brought home part of a cactus that someone from the town, near here, had given him. We had it in a big container of those 5 + gallon capacity paint containers. It remained there while it grew little by little without needing much care, my husband told me that it only had to be watered once a week.
We watched it grow without giving it much attention, except when one of us suffered a prick from its long spikes. The original plan was to take him to our new house that was under construction. But the transfer was postponed since the house was not finished.
We saw the pot break and the cactus grow uncontrollably until it almost reached a large loquat tree from the neighboring house and another from merey🌳
As we live in the tropics we have only two seasons, the rainy and the dry 🌧️☀️. During the rainy months the large cactus had a good time, and during the dry months too. It was pruned a few times and one of its arms (branches) fell on one occasion, causing only slight damage to a clothesline.
Before the weather became as unpredictable as it is now, we had both seasons clear and defined. We knew that it would start to rain in May and that the season culminated in October, in which there was a torrential downpour with an electrical storm that we call in Venezuela "Cordonazo de San Francisco." ⚡⛈️ One year was characterized by having a longer dry season and higher temperatures ☀️🌡️. The cactus grew and grew and got pretty🏜️.
One night we noticed that in the dark, white circles about 30 centimeters stood out on the cactus, which were increasing in size and that from dawn until the next morning they slowly diminished until they closed. As we paid more attention to them, we noticed something wonderful. Those circles were huge flowers that had a life cycle of only hours, but in the process they gave rise to a feast for many insects and a great feast for our eyes 🌼💮.
What I remember most about its first flowering is that it happened just after the end of the drought and the first rain of May. The flowers are beautiful and seem to glow in the dark, in addition something magical happens inside it: its pistils move, perhaps under the stimulus of the lights of the cameras.
I had shared photos of them on other sites before, but this year I tried to make a more detailed description to share in this Amazing Natural community's weekly thematic challenge. Here I show you some photos and videos and what I was able to investigate about this wonderful plant.

Hola, bienvenidos a mi blog. Hace alrededor de diez años mi esposo trajo a casa parte de un cactus que le había regalado alguien del pueblo, cerca de aquí. Lo teníamos en un gran recipiente de esos contenedores de pintura de más de 5 galones de capacidad. Alli permaneció mientras crecía poco a poco sin necesitar muchos cuidados, mi esposo me dijo que solo había que regarlo una vez por semana.
Lo veíamos crecer sin darle demasiada atención, salvo cuando alguno de nosotros sufría un pinchazo de sus largas púas. El plan original era llevarlo a nuestra nueva casa que estaba en construcción. Pero se fué posponiendo el traslado dado que la casa no se terminaba.
Vimos el pote romperse y el cactus crecer sin control hasta casi alcanzar a un gran árbol de níspero de la casa vecina y otro de merey🌳.
Como vivimos en el trópico tenemos solo dos estaciones, la lluviosa y la seca🌨️☀️ Durante los meses de lluvia el gran cactus lo pasaba bien, y durante los meses de sequía también. Se le podó algunas veces y uno de sus brazos (ramas), cayó en una ocasión, produciendo solo leves daños a un tendedero de ropa.
Antes de que el clima se hiciera tan impredecible como está ahora teníamos claras y definidas las dos estaciones. Sabíamos que empezaba a llover en mayo y que culminaba la temporada en octubre, en el cual se producía un torrencial aguacero con tormenta eléctrica al que llamamos en Venezuela "Cordonazo de San Francisco"⚡⛈️. Un año se caracterizó por tener una temporada de sequía mas prolongada y con temperaturas más altas ☀️🌡️. Él cactus crecía y crecía y se ponía bonito 🏜️.
Una noche notamos que en la oscuridad, sobre el cactus destacaban unos círculos blancos como de 30 centímetros, que iban aumentando de tamaño y que desde la madrugada hasta la mañana siguiente menguaban lentamente hasta cerrarse.
Al prestarles más atención nos percatamos de algo maravilloso. Esos círculos eran flores enormes que tenían un ciclo de vida de sólo horas, pero que en el proceso daban lugar a un festín para muchos insectos y un gran deleite para nuestros ojos 💮🌼.
Lo que más recuerdo de su primera floración es que se dió justo al terminar la sequía y darse la primera lluvia de mayo. La flor es hermosa y parece brillar en la oscuridad, además dentro de ella ocurre algo mágico: sus pistilos se mueven, tal vez bajo el estímulo de las luces de las cámaras.
Ya antes había compartido fotos de ellas en otros sitios, pero este año traté de hacer una descripción más detallada para compartir en el Amazing Nature Community thematic challenge. Aqui les muestro algunas fotos y lo que pude investigar sobre ésta maravillosa planta.
