Communism is just one implementation of socialist principles.
I think the USA isn't really able to fight socialism because they're very socialist themselves:

• Socialists had already taken over the USA before the 30's, creating policies that resulted in the great depression and then using it as an excuse to create more policies that made the depression last until after the war. After the war the USA only did better because the other industrial countries had been bombed so much.
• When the USA joined WW2 they gave massive subsidies to the sovjets to fight the nazi's and Mao to fight the Japanese
• More than half the USA budget is spend on pure socialist programs
  Seems pretty socialist to me.
  The current developments are just symptoms of western society becoming more and more progressive.
