Why is Mercury Considered the Unity of Opposites?

According to the law of correspondences, mercury illustrates this well.

Due to the ease of movement of mercury droplets on smooth surfaces, alchemists named it Mercury in honor of the Greco-Roman god Hermes (Mercury) – the swift messenger of the gods.

Mercury (Latin: Hydrargyrum) is:

  • ⚙️ the only metal in a liquid state 💧 (at room temperature)
  • ⚙️ 💧 opposing yet united within Mercury ⚙️

The word LIQUID is associated with ease for us;
BUT MERCURY

  • Heavy liquid metal

THEREFORE -
METAL and LIQUIDITY - opposites.
LIQUIDITY and LIGHTNESS - opposites.
But MERCURY - the "unity" where these opposites converge.

Since the 15th century, mercury has been used as a medicinal substance (its medical use was described by Paracelsus in 1530), but despite being considered a remedy, it's poisonous.

The fluidity and plasticity, mobility and the ability to adapt to various situations, underscore the uniqueness of this metal.

Mercury symbolizes the harmonious merging of two extremes: hardness and fluidity, structure and changeability. It demonstrates that even seemingly contradictory qualities can coexist and even enrich each other.
