It's funny how replaying certain titles that didn't hook you at first, experiencing them a little more and being dedicated to pass those first steps that don't seem quite right can open a real labyrinth and have so many hidden secrets, over the years I think I've developed the habit of playing even in those low moments, hoping that later on I'll be surprised with something great and I think this is the perfect case. I remember a year or so ago I had this game installed on my pc, but after playing it a few levels I decided it wasn't for me and ended up abandoning it at something like the fourth or fifth level, the difficulty is high throughout so there are times where you are constantly dying and it's not until you perfect the controls or have some luck that you can advance in certain areas.

Also, the game is also introducing throughout this first part new tools that we have to know how to integrate with the moveset we already have, it is surreal to think that the developers have planned all this, introducing new mechanics with the idea that at a certain point the game opens up and all the levels are available for us to explore and use these new tools in certain parts.

I think that elevates The Messenger's level design to another plane of existence, there were some parts where I wondered if I could get there somehow but the way they hide these little passageways so that the right moment, when you revisit them you have that *aha!* moment has caught me off base and is one of the most pleasant surprises I've ever had in a video game, because yes, I underestimated this title. There were several times (including that time I left it in first place) that I thought this game was a tribute to retro games, but nothing more than that, I did not see beyond that practice, and I was wrong in every way, although in my defense I will say that you have to play several hours to discover that secret that makes The Messenger so special in several ways, because also in the narrative something innovative.

I'm not going to spoiler here (sorry if I did it in other posts dealing with this game) but there are some twists that could put this game high for those who like well written stories and with some touches out of the ordinary, in the retro era the stories were not very well done because nobody paid attention to them, it was only the gameplay that caught the attention, but here I think they stand out to change that and know that there is potential to create a story with the mechanics that the game has.

Have you seen the scenery in this game? both 8-bit and 16-bit are better than ever in this game, sometimes I stay to take some screenshots as soon as I start the level because it's just too good, the game excels when we are in open landscapes, not so much when we are inside the caves although there are some details here and there that I take and I'm fond of them, there are references everywhere from various games, the most obvious one Ninja Gaiden but we could perfectly get some from Castlevania, Sonic and Contra.

I think it's the mix of all this (I haven't figured it all out yet too) that has kept me playing it to this day, some bosses are pretty cool but I think they just give a fight two or three times until we know the attack patterns and that's it, still I like to think that this whole first part in the 8-bit, with the classic bosses and platforming of those games is just a preparation for the revelation that comes later. The Messenger is one of the reasons why I prefer to play indies and experience them before I move on to some AAA that costs three times as much and feels empty.

Es curioso como al rejugar ciertos titulos que no te engancharon de primera, experimentarlos un poco mas y estar dedicado a pasar esos primeros pasos que no te parecen del todo buenos puede abrir un autentico laberinto y tener tantos secretos escondidos, con el pasar de los años creo que he desarrollado la costumbre de jugar incluso en esos momentos bajos, esperar que mas adelante me sorprenda con algo genial y creo que este es el caso perfecto. Recuerdo que hace un año mas o menos tenia este juego instalado en mi pc, pero al jugarlo algunos niveles decidi que no era para mi y lo termine abandonando en algo asi como el cuarto o quinto nivel, la dificultad es alta en todo momento asi que hay momentos en donde estas muriendo constantemente y no es hasta que perfeccionas los controles o tienes algo de suerte que puedes avanzar en ciertas areas.

Ademas, el juego tambien esta introduciendo durante toda esta priemra parte nuevas herramientas que tenemos que saber integrar con el moveset que ya tenemos, es surreal pensar que los desarrolladores hayan planificado todo esto, introducirte nuevas mecanicas con la idea de que en cierta parte el juego se abre y todos los niveles estan disponibles para nosotros explorar y utilizar estas nuevas herramientas en ciertas partes.

Creo que eso eleva el diseño de niveles de The Messenger a otro plano de existencia, habia algunas partes en donde me preguntaba si podia llegar ahi de alguna forma pero el modo en el que esconden estos pequeños pasadizos para que el momento correcto, cuando vuelvas a visitarlos tengas ese *aha!* moment me ha agarrado fuera de base y es una de las sorpresas mas gratas que he tenido en un videojuego, porque si, subestime este titulo. Fueron varias las ocasiones (incluyendo esa vez que lo deje en primer lugar) que pensaba que este juego era un homenaje a los juegos retro, pero nada mas que eso, no veia mas alla de esa practica, y que equivocado estaba en todos los sentidos, aunque en mi defensa voy a decir que hay que jugar varias horas para descubrir ese secreto que hace a The Messenger tan especial en varios sentidos, porque tambien en lo narrativo innova algo.

No voy a hacer spoiler aca (lamento si lo hice en otros post tratando este juego) pero hay algunos giros que podrian poner a este juego bien alto para los que les gustan las historias bien escritas y con algunos toques fuera de lo comun, en la era retro las historias no eran muy bien hechas debido a que nadie le prestaba atencion a ellas, era solo el gameplay lo que llamaba la atencion, pero aca creo que se destacan para cambiar eso y saben que hay potencial para crear una historia con las mecanicas que tiene el juego.

Han visto los paisajes de este juego? tanto el 8-bits como el 16-bits estan mejor que nunca en este juego, ha veces me quedo a tomar algunas capturas nada mas empezar el nivel porque es simplemente demasiado bueno, el juego destaca cuando estamos ante paisajes abiertos, no tanto cuando estamos dentro de las cuevas aunque si hay algunos detalles aqui y alla que me llevo y les tengo cariño, hay referencias por todas partes de varios juegos, el mas obvio Ninja Gaiden pero podriamos perfectamente conseguir algunos de Castlevania, Sonic y Contra.

Creo que es la mezcla de todo esto (tambien aun no he descubierto todo) lo que me ha mantenido jugandolo hasta hoy, algunos jefes estan muy bien pero creo que se limitan a dar una pelea dos o tres veces hasta que nos sepamos los patrones de ataque y hasta ahi llegaron, aun asi me gusta pensar que toda esta primera parte en los 8-bits, con los clasicos jefes y plataformas de esos juegos es solo una preparacion para la revelacion que viene despues. The Messenger es una de las razones por las que prefiero jugar indies y experimentarlos antes de pasarme a algun AAA que cueste el triple y se sienta vacio.
