So summer is here in sunny Brisbane Australia, and that means one thing!... The local birds are back at war with each other.
Butcher Bird
Now here is some history of our back yard turf war. The noisy Minors run this backyard. And any bird that stops in for a feed or drink quickly gets ambushed by this ruthless bird gang. They fly in from all directions and will attack any bird no matter the size. Which is a good thing to keep out the ibis but unfortunately they have muscled out all the kookaburras out along with the galahs.
Noisy Minor
I have noticed this baby butcher bird has been hanging out on our back deck and stands his ground with the noisy minors. Until he is out numbered then flies off.
Butcher birds get their name from the brutal way they feed. When they catch their prey, they will hang it in a tree or a fork in the tree and hack at the meat (just like a butcher) with their beak!
Now I have seen these guys catch small lizards and mice before but this ruthless bird had pay back on his mind.
I was putting the rubbish out and behind the bin I saw this guy hacking at a baby noisy minor on the ground. He must have gotten it out of thier nest as some sort of gangland shit to send a message to the rest of the noisy minors that he is the top dog of the back yard.
I quickly grabbed my camera as he took the body up into the trees.
It wasn't long before the noisy minor squad heard of the brutal payback and came in with the quickness.
Nature sure is metal 馃馃
