Prelude
Hi all, hope all is well for you and it is time for another Battle Mage Secrets. Last week, we looked a ruleset which favours totally accelerates the gameplay and inflict the whole lineup with poison that eats up 2 health each turn. Today, we look at a classic ruleset which restricts the cards that we can use in the match.

Ruleset Spotlight

Odd Ones Out

Description:

  • Only units with odd mana costs may be used.
  • Summoners are not affected by the restriction.

What thrives with this ruleset?
This is an interesting ruleset because I cannot use half of my collection. And most importantly, I cannot use all the 0 mana cards (the Fiends in Modern and Chicken in Wild) which is kind of a bummer.

But nevertheless, we still have a big pool of odd mana cards at our disposal. Somehow for my own collection, I tend to do better for this ruleset for some splinters but do real badly for the others.

For me, I like it when it is Life, Fire and Death because somehow the odd mana cards for these splinters for me, have a bigger collection and also a bigger variety of abilities that can be brought to the match.

For Life, these are my usual picks:
Captain Katie
Iziar
Stitch Leech
Drybone Barbarian
Imperial Knight
Meriput Magician

For Fire, these are my usual picks:
Torch Vizier
Lava Launcher
Tenyii Striker
Gobalano Soldier
Forgotten One

For Death, these are my usual picks:
Silent Sha-vi
Pelacor Deceiver
Life Sapper
Soul Strangler
Fenmoor Haunt
Djinn Muirat
Lira The Dark

And to top it all off, Neutral will be:
Disintegrator
Uraeus
Venari Marksrat
Spirit Hoarder
Scavo Hireling
Ulundin Overseer

These are all very good cards to be considered for this ruleset. All are having either very decent stats or good abilities to help you win the game.

With these in mind, let's start to talk about the battle proper.

Prediction before pressing rumble
This is almost like a mirror match other than the difference choice of anchoring card. I chose to use Iziar while my opponent chose to use Drybone Barbarian. 2 very different cards of which one focuses on rampaging from the front while the other is used to hold up magic damage before slowly clearing up opponent lineup. But which is better? We can only see it during the battle.

Let's battle!

Battle Synopsis

Round 1, For a very long time, I have yet to see such an uneventful opening round. In this round, it is just scratching one another with absolutely 0 casualties or even signs of knocking out any cards.

Round 2, Ok, finally some action. Iziar took out Venari Marksrat, triggering Martyr. While Captain Katie took out Meriput Magician. 0 casualties on my end which I am really thankful.

image.png

Round 3, It is too much to handle a Drybone Barbarian whom just knock out Gargoya Scrapper in one blow. The round continued with the cards continue their beatdown on Drybone Barbarian.

image.png

Round 4, This round only one significant thing happened which is the taking down of Drybone Barbarian.

image.png

Round 5, This round ended after 2 hits. First blast, Captain Katie took out opponent's Katie, next blast, Iziar took out Uraeus. And with that, victory is secured!

Post Battle Summary
Whew, an almost mirror match ended up with a very different outcome due to choice of cards. But nevertheless, I am thankful to be on the better side of the outcome. Nice win for me.

Did my strategy work? Yes, it totally did. The choice of using Iziar together with other supporting cards totally made the whole lineup very well rounded and covered in many angles. Meriput and Spirit Hoarding ensured everyone was healthy be it at the front or at the back, while Captain Katie had just one objective, smash things in her way and get bigger. This combo really make it a hard for opponent and it helped me secured a sweet victory.

What's the Battle Mage Secret?

The battle mage secret for today is essentially revolving a set of cards that can form a combo and make it tough for opponent. With a taunt, tank heal and triage, I managed to formed a defensive combo to ensure that the front tank stays healthy while the backline will taunt all the non melee attacks towards it and healed back by triage. And then coupled with damage already contained, the next is to put in some damage cards in the form of Captain Katie to continuously deal significant damage to opponent lineup and bit by bit, secure the advantage of the match and finally win the match.

This is a very good combo that I would like to share today and I do hope you can also find some combos in other odd mana cards to have them work together.
