I hadn't really thought about it before, but sackcloth isn't black. Gunny sacks, flour sacks, and etc., are made of cloth as inexpensive as possible, tend to be Earth tones, tan, brown, or cream colored, whatever color the natural fibers from which they are made are. I know of no natural fiber used to make any fabric that is black. Dying cloth costs money, and sackcloth is as inexpensive as it can be made, to avoid increasing the costs of the commodity being packaged. Flour mills assisted women making dresses from flour sacks during the Great Depression, and deliberately printed their sacks with attractive floral patterns, with labels that would wash away so pretty dresses could be made for little girls after the flour was gone. Now such packaging is made of paper, too insubstantial to make dresses from.
