I think most people subconsciously understand very well our situation, and that people who can only face reality in their subconscious mind are those most drawn to cheer for overlords, to be Karens, or join hordes of blackshirts to beat ordinary civilians to oppose fascism. Cognitive dissonance isn't an incapacity to accord reality. It is the limitation of that accord with reality to their subconscious mind, to prevent it from being consciously realized and people having to acknowledge their cowardice.

The knowledge that we are the heroes we're waiting for causes cowards to despair, because they are afraid, too afraid to do what has to be done to save themselves, and face their enemies. As long as they pretend everything is fine, they are allowed to live like everything is fine while vile overlords commit horrific evil and achieve progressively the complete capture of the wealth of the world.

Apres moi, le deluge! think all of us that conform and eat our kibble in our cozy bugpods. We non-heroes won't be the people that forge the destiny of humanity, the communities that crowd fund 3d printed moon rockets and build space colonies where psychopathic overlords can't parasitize their production. It will be clear eyed and humble people that do that, people that are willing to endure cramped quarters and poverty of circumstances so that their posterity can have more, can be free and prosperous.
