My First Handmade Apron: Upcycled Towel with Crochet Mushrooms

I was staring at my apron yesterday and thought it was worn out and in need of replacement.

I began thinking about finding a good, absorbent, and soft material that I would enjoy. Most of the ones in the shop are either too thin or made of plastic.

Last week, I bought a couple of towels for my kitty, and I was impressed by their thickness and quality.

One of them is unused, so I decided to turn it into an apron.

I first cut a strip from the top to shorten it and used that as a pocket.

Then, I cut a wedge from the two top corners to shape it for the upper chest.

I hand-stitched the edges of the cut sides.

Next, I stitched the pocket in place and attached it.

For the straps, I used left over macarame cord in dusky pink.

I used a bit of macramé technique- larks head knot and square knots.

Using a crochet hook, I grabbed the middle of two cords through the material. And made a larks head knot.

Then, I made a gathering knot to connect the end of the straps.

The straps were pretty secure, and I managed to have just enough length for the job.

I happily hung it up last night and thought that was the end of it.

But

This afternoon, I sat outside enjoying the lovely day and thought of embellishing it with crochet.

So, I went outside and checked and decided to keep it earthy theme.

so I used some of my avocado-dyed yarn and added brown and beige to complete the palette.

These are avocado dyed. The light is dyed from avocado peel and the orangey from seeds.

I crocheted a few mushrooms to cover the patch and give it a bit of a lift.
I enjoyed making the mushrooms.

I secured them in place with pins.

And I tried it on if it looked okay while still a bit bright outside! And being careful with the pins!

Then, I stitched them in place with matching sewing thread, making sure they were securely fastened.

Just in time to cook dinner, my apron was ready!

I was really pleased with the result, and the rest of the family admired it too!
