This instrument is called berimbau, it is of African origin and was used to scare away ancestral spirits. It came to Brazil brought by slaves and is used to mark the rhythm of capoeira. Dance that the slaves of Brazil used to train a type of fight and keep themselves athletic and strong, without the masters knowing. Hope this helps
