Whenever I hear news about artificial intelligence, or even when the mere name of it passes through my mind, the first thing I think of is Frankenstein's monster. It reminds me of a book I read during my bachelor's studies. It's a story of a creator who makes a monster to life from different body parts of dead bodies of human. But due to certain flaws in the new creation, the monster eventually kills its own creator just to seek revenge from the creator for all those imperfections.
There is a lot of discussion that artificial intelligence will soon become a monster that might kill the humanity living on earth.
It is certainly scary news that artificial intelligence will kill all humans in the next decade. However, the issue is not artificial intelligence itself. Rather, it is how humans are using it. The various tools developed for artificial intelligence are merely tools, but if they are misused, they will prove to be a threat to all of humanity.
Human History and Inventions
Throughout history, humans have created so many tools for their convenience. Take Industrial Revolution or the the early discovery of how to turn on fire. Also, humans developed various tools in the agricultural sector. Impressively, humans mastered their use, and effectively utilized them for own good.
However, I consider Artificial Intelligence to be an invention that represents a height or precisely a culminating point of human civilization( quite a hyberbole). It agains take to remember another thing; in one exam this year, i had to attempt an essay on topic : Artificial Intelligence; A double edged sword. Indeed, it's actually a double edged sword that poses harms and also give assistance in a lot aspects of human life.
Artificial Intelligence and Brain
Artificial Intelligence was created to help us, and it is responsibility of us that we must use it effectively rather than becoming overly dependent on it. I observe students ( particularly my cousins at home)who, instead of first thinking through brain on a topic, go quickly to AI to ask the question. The time that should be spent in doing brainstorming is now being being spent on AI. The result is that the brain fails to develop properly. There are a lot of studies and researches about the question that how Artificial Intelligence is effecting the way our brains function. It is indeed shrinking our brain capabilities.
AI & Water
The second major concern is that to run these artificial intelligence models, there is need of large and massive data centers. These data centers significantly pollute our living environments and generate noise wherever these are located. Above all, these larger installations of data centers consume vast amounts of fresh water to cool down their infrastructure. Think for a second; isn't humans are facing water scarcity? Are we waiting for large scale droughts? These data centers will be responsible for upcoming droughts.
What needs to be done?
Artificial Intelligence can prove to be extremely dangerous. Therefore, both the users and the developers of AI models must be guided by ethical principles. Governments of each country should supervise these companies and regulate these models strictly. Since most of these compamies are private and these are largely operating in free manner so it is a lot of risker than any other project. There is an urgent need to bring them under control.
