I live in the middle of nowhere, and I see all of this. The roads aren't a problem, and I can get 240V 3-phase electric, but my internet service is lousy. The thing is, in a democratic society, what people get is simply what the majority wants - theoretically. For example, if the majority of the voters are retirees on fixed income, why would they want to pay for public schools? If you live in such an area and you have school-age children, either homeschool them or move, don't demand that the majority foot the bill - such is the shortcoming of democracy, but there is a good reason for it.

Altruism is a luxury; only those who already have plenty can afford to be generous. Unless people already have a wide margin of comfort in their lives (a perception of plenty), they will not choose to give up what they have for the benefit of others. Coercing people to make concessions for "the community" when their own lives are not comfortable serves only to foment resentment. Forced altruism is false altruism.

With all that in mind, how much of it applies to Hive projects? Because I'll bet the majority of the funding comes from a handful of whales.
