The Munich based company was formed in 1916 in the name of Bayerische Flugzeug-Werke AG (BFW). The same year, Flugmaschinefabrik Gustav Otto firm merged into BFW under government directive. Elsewhere, the Rapp Motorenwerke was renamed Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH in 1917, and was converted into a public limited company (AG) in 1918.
Later in 1922, BFW acquired BMW AG, including its entire engine building operations and brand name.
