I would rather see this method used where trust is minimized and all funds are immediately returned to the DHF. Also, potato IIRC does not address overvaluation, which is actually the bigger challenge

Correct. In fact this proposal wasn't intended in response to the current pump at all. I started some private discussions of it prior to the pump even happening. The timing is a bit of a strange coincidence.

a) Having more votes than the number of witnesses was originally by intent. In fact the original number of votes was unlimited. It had to be limited due to an expoit having to do with backup witnesses

No, it isn't feasible to change the code so soon before a hardfork. There are already exchanges running the release, and they already complained that getting it only a day or two before was way too late.

Hive does not exist yet. The new chain launches in about 3 hours. There is a countdown timer on the hive.io web site, but I would wait for a while even after that in case there are some early glitches.
