Making a Bowsaw, Part 3, Cutting a Tenon
The handle attaches to the cross brace with a mortice and tenon. The tenon is purposely cut a little loose and the shoulder is curved to allow the handle to pivot slightly as the blade is tensioned. I

Making a Bowsaw, Part 2, the Cross Brace
I finished both handles. They are not exactly symmetrical, but hey, close enough for hand made. One still has a bit of bark on the back. I think I will keep it. I will try to reinforce the cracks later.

Making a Bow Saw, Part 1, Carving the Handle
If you read my last post you might have noticed I was using a japanese rip saw to mill up some sycamore. You can see that post here: It did the job but it is not really the right tool. I am going to use

Milling Sycamore
I have had these punky old sycamore slabs for a few years so I decided I would put one of them to use for a frame saw I want to make. I am using a ryoba for now. It has some pretty nice grain sawn on the

Another Roadside Find, This Time in Velvet Mesquite
A common tree in the southwest, very popular in landscaping, but people often water them too frequently, so their roots grow shallow, which means they blow over easily. Then they get chopped up and left

Pie Crust Tea Table, One Last Detail
The tilt top needs a latch. So what do you do with a cracked up old scrap of desert ironwood? It was originally meant to be a part of a handmade marking gauge, but it broke when I went to punch out the

Quick Woodturning While I Plan the Next Big Project
Now that the Pie Crust Tea Table is done, it is time to get to work on some bookshelves I promised to make. I picked up this 8/4 stick of walnut at the nearby lumber yard to use to make the frame. I could

So I just draped a white sheet over my work bench and took a bunch of overexposed pics of the table. Came out OK. If you love it, set it free,

Pie Crust Tea Table, Applying an Antique Finish
Before finishing, I needed to make a few repairs. The scraping action of the beading plane is a bit rough on cross grain, so I smoothed it with some wood filler. I want it to look old timey, so I did applied

Now I need to cut a matching groove in the base of the spindle for the dovetail on each leg. (Sorry, these gifs may take some time to load, but it is worth it.) I marked out an area on the spindle to flatten

Pie Crust Tea Table, Turning the Spindle
I started with a piece of scrap poplar left over from my vise jaws to practice, since I would only have one chance to get it right in walnut. Then used that as a template for the real one. I am still learning

Pie Crust Tea Table — Beading the Legs
The legs needed some detail, so I put my beading plane to use. According to the instructions, you are not supposed to use this crossgrain. I did get a bit of tearout, but nothing I cannot repair. The tool
