... dawn and sunrise. From cavemen to Egyptians, Peruvians, Indians. They sang, danced, vibrated their musical instruments to celebrate the sunrise.

To celebrate the rising day is to remember that nothing is taken for granted. It is to feel gratitude for something that seems banal.

Today, we are no longer afraid that the sun will not rise. We no longer make offerings to it, we no longer sing songs to it, we no longer dance for it. But who is really sure that tomorrow, again, it will rise?

Without the sun, life cannot exist.
I was told that in a perpetual night lit only by the distant stars, the temperature of the earth would fall to - 270°! The Moon would disappear from our sight because it is not lit. Nothing could survive.

Yet we are so confident, so carefree.

Realizing that nothing is eternal, I decided to get up every morning and do the yoga postures of 'greeting to the sun'.

The sun salutation is a perfect morning practice to awaken your body, focus your mind and connect to a sense of gratitude for the new day.

Originally, the sun salutation was not a sequence of postures, but rather a sequence of sacred words. The Vedic tradition, which predates classical yoga by thousands of years, honoured the sun as the symbol of the Divine. Thereafter, it became, a sequence of yoga postures that followed the breath.

Surya Namaskar is like a sacred prayer dedicated to the sun. In the greeting to the sun we honour the earth, the heavens and all life.

Do you also greet the sun every morning? What is your morning routine?
