The Chinese have a funny story about "thinking you know everything, so there's no reason to inquire further":

The Chinese character for the number "one" is a single horizontal line. The Chinese character for "two" is two horizontal lines. The Chinese character for "three" is three horizontal lines.

One day, a professor was teaching his youthful students how to write "numbers" on his chalkboard. After he showed them "number three" (see above), a student cried out "ok, we get it. can we have a different lesson now?" The professor smiled and told the class that they were dismissed, and their homwork was to write the number "ten thousand" and bring it to class the following day. :)

Of course, the Chinese have a single character for 10,000. But if all you knew were the first three numbers, one may expect that the Chinese would write 10,000 horizontal lines to express the number 10,000. (in fact, the horizontal lines end at three. The "number four" has its own character, as do the other numbers up to "number ten". As extra trivia, the word for "number four" in Mandarin sounds very close to the Mandarin word for "death", and thus some Chinese believe the number four to be cursed. Many hotels avoid the number 4 and even numbers in the forties in deference to their Chinese guests who may believe the curse)
