The goal with Assange was always to let him rot in enforced silence until he died, the idea being that martyrdom would be counterproductive and letting the news cycle fade him away would be the most preferable.
Unfortunately for those planners, Assange has become a bit of a hot potato. Public sentiment, although muted by the international media, hasn't let Assange fade from the public consciousness. Moving him to Belmarsh was expected to kill him by debilitation, but it hasn't worked. Now the fear is that he goes free to Australia where he'll be hailed as an international hero unless the Australian authorities can find a way to have him fall out of a high building window with plausible deniability. I don't see how a kangaroo court hearing in the USA would increase the acceptability of Assange as an actual criminal - if anything, it will give even more fuel to those pointing to the DoJ as being a bully for the DNC. They really need Assange to "catch a very bad cold". That's my prediction.
