At the moment, the Rio Olympics seem doomed to become a huge catastrophe. More and more stories are rushing in about the many problems athletes are facing. The Olympic village is a mess, athletes are getting mugged (more than once...), and the pollution is a real problem. Not to mention the Zika virus...
But if this sounds familiar to you, it's because we went through the exact same process just two years ago, at the World Cup. A couple of weeks before the games, every media outlet and their mother were reporting about the horrible state in which the World Cup stadiums were in.
But the second the games started, everything else was forgotten. Once the teams took to the fields, almost no one reported about the travesties of the World Cup.
And we are sure to go through this exact same script again. After the opening ceremony on Saturday, nobody's going to care about the problems surrounding the games. Nobody's going to report about the troubles in Brazil.
And worst of all is the fact that the worst is yet to come. Qatar, the host for the 2022 World Cup, is already being accused of human rights violations. But I guarantee that even there, once the games start, no one will remember the problems.
And so it seems like this story is inevitable. Maybe we get bored quickly and forget, or maybe the details in the media are exaggerated. But whatever the case, it seems like we can do a whole lot more to stop this from happening. Fortunately, it seems like at least where the World Cup is concerned, conditions may improve soon after FIFA tried to clean up its act. As for the Olympics, we can only hope that in the future venues will be chosen more appropriately, and routine checkups before the games be made more thourough.
