To the other points. I also don't see much merit in the business model. There should be a free basic tier with certain limits and upvotes should be distributed to manually curated top content.

I'd say its a mix between Technology, Community and Accessibility. Steem excels on accessibility (it is exceptionally easy to develop application on top of Steem) has a decently large actual user base
