While the war rages on the northern continent, I have not neglected the economic and civil development of my main cities back in the home territory. The truth is that with all the infrastructure built by engineer units and the natural resources available, the progress of these cities provides a promising future for the empire. Although Caracas has historically focused on the production of military units, I have recently modernized it with buildings aimed at improving the economy. I am currently finishing the construction of a Stock Exchange, which will significantly boost the income from taxes and luxury rates generated by the city.

The eastern cities also show great potential, specifically the small town of Guanare. It is surrounded by several mountains ideal for mining and holds an oil deposit. It has progressed so rapidly lately that I decided to start the construction of a Bank. Although it will take several turns to complete, it will grant the city very useful bonuses for gold production and tax collection. This internal strengthening is vital to sustaining the high costs of our overseas military campaigns and ensuring that our technological disadvantage is offset by raw economic power.

I recently accessed the civilization statistics screen and noticed that the current population is 10,230,000. This figure seems somewhat low given the massive expansion and military hegemony of the Republic, but it is expected to increase eventually as the new infrastructures take effect. Additionally, the interface shows that I have chosen a totalitarian government to focus all efforts on the war machine and expansionist policies. While this system is efficient for combat, it does not provide the same level of social welfare or development as a democratic government, which is a very immersive and interesting mechanic in Freeciv.

It is slightly ironic and even a bit funny how the game mechanics explain why my diplomatic relations are so damaged; a regime like this is not exactly designed to make friends. However, I cannot afford to relax. A single oversight could mean another civilization overtaking me in some way. The Dahomeans already possess more advanced technology, and the only thing keeping them at bay is my superior production and military capacity. I must remain extremely cautious and keep the pressure high, both on the front lines and in our domestic economy.

La verdad es que, con toda la infraestructura construida por las unidades de ingenieros y los recursos naturales disponibles, el desarrollo de las ciudades brinda a mi imperio un futuro prometedor. Igualmente, las ciudades orientales tienen un gran potencial, como la pequeña ciudad de Guanare. Cuenta con varias montañas ideales para la minería y un yacimiento de petróleo. Ha progresado tan rápido últimamente que he decidido construirle un Banco. Aunque todavía faltan varios turnos para que se termine, le otorgará a la ciudad bonos de producción de oro e impuestos muy útiles. Este fortalecimiento interno es vital para sostener los altos costos de las campañas militares en el extranjero y asegurar que nuestra desventaja tecnológica sea compensada con poder económico bruto.

Curiosamente, accedí a la pantalla de estadísticas de la civilización y noté que la población actual es de 10,230,000 habitantes. Me parece una cifra algo baja para toda la expansión y hegemonía militar de la República, pero es algo que irá aumentando eventualmente a medida que las nuevas infraestructuras surtan efecto. Además, en la interfaz se puede observar que he elegido un gobierno totalitario para enfocar todo el esfuerzo en la maquinaria bélica y las políticas expansionistas. Si bien este sistema es eficiente para el combate, no brinda un desarrollo y bienestar social tan grande como un gobierno democrático, lo cual es una mecánica muy inmersiva e interesante de Freeciv.

Resulta ligeramente gracioso notar cómo las mecánicas del juego explican por qué mis relaciones diplomáticas están tan estropeadas; un régimen así no está diseñado precisamente para hacer amigos. Sin embargo, no puedo relajarme. Un descuido puede significar que otra civilización logre superarme de alguna forma. Los dahomeyanos ya poseen una tecnología más avanzada, y lo único que los mantiene a raya es mi capacidad de producción y fuerza militar. Debo ser muy cauteloso y no bajar la guardia, tanto en el frente de batalla como en nuestra economía interna.
