This price is set by the witnesses as well. The base feed price is actually the median price of Hive over the last 3.5 days.

The Hive price is set by the witnesses (price feed). I calculate the HBD by dividing the Hive price by the internal market price (HIVE/HBD).

I am going to add the HIVE API nodes to Steemnow so Steemnow can be used for both Steem and Hive. I have also registered hiveblockexplorer.com :-)
