Today is World Anesthesiologist Day, a date on which the medical professionals in charge of a procedure that was key to the development of modern medicine and surgery, as we know it today, are celebrated.
This commemoration is celebrated on this date in honor of the fact that on October 16 of 1846, the first operation was officially performed with a previously anesthetized patient. In Greek, the word "anesthesia" means "without sensitivity" to perceive pain (anaesthesia)
The surgery was possible thanks to the product that the dentist William Thomas Morton had contributed: the ether. It was held in the amphitheater of the Faculty of Medicine of the Massachusetts General Hospital, in the United States. The surgery performed was the extraction of a congenital tumor from a twenty-year-old patient. When the patient regained consciousness after the operation was over, he stated that he had not felt anything. It was a great advance and made it possible to carry out new surgical operations that were previously impossible due to the great pain they caused, reaching the point where the patient could die of the pain caused.
We have made a lot of progress since then, but the need for anesthesia has not changed much. Anesthesiologists are also in charge of supervising the vital signs of patients during operations and constantly adjusting the anesthesia procedure according to each case to be treated. It is a delicate task and if a mistake is made it can be fatal, the patient may never wake up if the anesthesia is performed with errors.
This is why the discipline is studied in most countries as a specialty, after obtaining a university degree in medicine. +++

Hoy es el Día Mundial del Anestesiólogo, fecha en que se celebra a los profesionales de la medicina encargados de un procedimiento que fue clave para el desarrollo de la medicina moderna y de la cirugía, tal como la conocemos en la actualidad.
Se celebra en esta fecha esta conmemoración en honor a que en el 16 de octubre del año 1846, se realizó oficialmente la primera operación con un paciente previamente anestesiado. En griego, la palabra "anestesia" quiere decir "sin sensibilidad" para percibir dolor (anaesthesia)
La cirugía fue posible gracias al producto que había aportado el odontólogo William Thomas Morton: el éter. Fue realizada en el anfiteatro de la facultad de Medicina del Massachusetts General Hospital, de los Estados Unidos. La cirugía realizada fue la extracción de un tumor congénito a un paciente de veinte años. Cuando el paciente recuperó la conciencia, luego de terminada la operación, declaró no haber sentido nada. Fue un gran avance y permitió realizar nuevas operaciones quirúrgicas que estaban anteriormente imposibilitadas por el gran dolor que producían, llegando al caso de que el paciente podría morir del dolor causado.
Mucho avance hemos tenido desde entonces, pero la necesidad de la anestesia no ha cambiado mucho. Los anestesiólogos son también los encargados de supervisar las constantes vitales de los pacientes durante las operaciones y ajustar constantemente el procedimiento de anestesia según cada caso a tratar. Es una tarea delicada y que si se comete un error puede ser fatal, el paciente puede que nunca despierte si la anestesia es realizada con errores.
Es por esto que la disciplina se estudia en la mayoría de los países como una especialidad, posterior al logro del grado universitario de medicina.
