There is something magical about rescuing a life that others have already discarded. I remember that afternoon, the hot asphalt of the city, and there, in a crack in the pavement, was an orbea, bruised, almost crushed, with its pale and dehydrated stems. I do not know what prompted me to bend down, but I picked it up carefully, like someone lifting a broken treasure, and I took it home without even knowing if I could save it.

I planted it in a small pot with sandy soil along with my other plants and placed it in the sunniest spot in the garden. For weeks, I saw no change, and its stems remained wilted, as if it had lost the will to live, but I kept watering it moderately.

One day, I noticed that its tips were beginning to turn green with tiny shoots, like fingers stretching after a long sleep.

Months passed, and the orbea grew in all directions, with those quadrangular stems and minuscule teeth that seemed taken from another galaxy, and it became my silent pride, my reminder that patience always brings reward.

Three days ago, when I peered into the garden, I saw a dark flash among the green, and there it was: a flower, a black star, as some call it. Its tone was so deep that it seemed to drink the light, dark wine red, almost black at the edges, with veins that gleamed like wet silk. The petals, arranged in a star shape, had a velvety texture.

That flower was proof that life finds unexpected paths. That plant I had picked up from the ground, doomed and dirty, was returning the favor with a beauty I did not know existed. Orbeas do not bloom on a whim; they do so when they are happy, when they feel safe. I remembered then that life gives us flowers when we least expect them, and that sometimes the most beautiful gifts come wrapped in trash and oblivion.

alt

Today, as I write this, the flower remains open, defying the passage of days. I know its life will be brief, like that of all flowers, but its message will remain etched in me, for it has taught me that what seems lost can bloom, that what others consider trash can be a miracle.

Una estrella negra en mi jardรญn

alt
