Downy woodpeckers are one of the smaller of their species. They are known to be able to move more acrobatically around a tree trunk, often being able to hang vertically, as seen in a couple of these images. This one appears to be a female; males have a little red tuft of feathers on the top of their heads. They reside in open woodlands; I often see them in parks with plenty of trees, and this one was at the entrance of a park as I first entered, which made me feel lucky that day to encounter one so soon.
