Barnaby was a bird of good taste. While other Gulls in his family hung out looking for scraps at the garbage dump, Barnaby hunted fresher game. He frequented the paved, grease-scented parking lot of the local Pizza Hut.
It was 2:15 PM on a rainy Tuesday and Barnaby was perched atop the blue clothing donation bin, watching. Then, the miracle happened. A car pulled out of a parking space, tossing a cardboard pizza box toward the dumpster and missing. The box landed on the asphalt, spilling it's contents!
Barnaby launched.

He landed with webbed feet on the wet asphalt beside the single, untouched slice of Meat Lover’s pan pizza. It was a masterpiece with a layer of tangy sauce, and a tangled web of melted mozzarella holding down the deliciousness of pepperoni, sausage, and ham. His favorite!

Then came the threat. A shadow crossed the pavement. A younger, gull touched down three feet away, letting out a sharp, envious scream.
But Barnaby had what he had come for. The toppings!

With no time left, down went the pepperoni. Down went the ham. A few bites of thick, oil-soaked crust and he was satisfied to leave the remains for his younger brother.
He had eaten what he came for!

His belly was full of the best part of two thousand calories of pure dairy and cured meat. He was completely satisfied, and utterly king of the parking lot.
