I also played it for a while, the game coincided with the promotion of the 1984 Olympics and the 1983 Pan American Games which took place the year of the game's release.

I'll go with you on that because I've never been able to win a fight let alone a tournament.

That's true, after the first one they made it very complicated and there were times when the player was discouraged to continue. Mario was more friendly and relaxing.
