I started my walk in the charming village of Amberley, known for its quaint cottages and the historic Amberley Castle. As I set off, I spotted the iconic white chalk cliffs in the distance, providing a beautiful backdrop to the lush green pastures.
As I walked, I encountered some friendly local farmers tending to their sheep. They were very welcoming and shared stories about the region’s agricultural history, which dates back thousands of years. It was fascinating to hear about how the landscape has been shaped by farming practices over the centuries.
I also met a group of fellow walkers who were exploring the trail for the first time. We chatted about our favorite places in England and exchanged tips on hidden gems to visit along the way. It was lovely to meet people who share my passion for history and the outdoors.
Along the path, I stumbled upon the ruins of an ancient hill fort, which provided a perfect spot to stop for a break. Standing there, I felt the weight of history, imagining how people must have lived and defended themselves in this area hundreds of years ago.
As I continued my journey, I was captivated by the landscape. The views from the top of the Downs were breathtaking, with a patchwork of fields and woodlands stretching as far as the eye could see. I even spotted some wild deer darting through the trees, which added to the magic of the day.
The walk ended at the picturesque town of Lewes, where I treated myself to a slice of cake at a lovely café while reflecting on the day. It was a perfect blend of nature, history, and companionship, reminding me once again of why I love exploring the English countryside.
