As I set off from Bourton-on-the-Water, the sound of the River Windrush flowing gently alongside me was soothing. The iconic stone bridges and quaint cottages with thatched roofs were a delight to see, giving the village its nickname "Venice of the Cotswolds." I paused to admire the old stone bridge and took some photos of the lovely riverbank, dotted with swans and ducks.
Heading towards Lower Slaughter, I walked along a well-marked footpath fringed with hedgerows bursting with wildflowers. The scent of blooming honeysuckle filled the air, and I spotted several butterflies fluttering about. I met a friendly couple walking their dog, and we struck up a conversation about the local history. They shared stories about the area’s wool trade in the 18th century and pointed out a historic mill that has been beautifully preserved.
Arriving in Lower Slaughter, I was captivated by the tranquility of the village. The Old Mill stood proudly by the river, and I took some time to sit by the water’s edge and enjoy my packed lunch while listening to the gentle sounds of nature. The rustic charm of the village was enchanting, and I could easily imagine life here in centuries past.
On my way back, I stumbled upon a local art gallery that showcased works from Cotswold artists. The owner was kind enough to give me a brief tour, explaining how the landscapes of the region have inspired generations of creatives.
Overall, it was a delightful day filled with beautiful scenery, rich history, and lovely conversations. I truly appreciate how each walk allows me to connect with the past and the people who help keep that history alive.
