As I set out from the charming village of Bourton-on-the-Water, I was immediately captivated by the quaint stone bridges crossing the River Windrush, nicknamed the "Venice of the Cotswolds." The water was crystal clear, and ducks paddled lazily about, while families picnicked along the riverbank.
I followed a well-marked path that took me through fields dotted with sheep, their woolly coats contrasting beautifully against the green grass. The scent of earthy leaves and blooming hedgerows filled the air. Along the way, I stumbled upon a small, hidden waymarker—an ancient stone with inscriptions dating back to the 17th century. It made me ponder the stories it could tell of the countless walkers who had passed by over the centuries.
During the walk, I met a lovely elderly lady named Mrs. Thompson, who was walking her golden retriever, Max. She was full of local knowledge and proudly shared tales of her childhood in the area. She told me about the history of the old wool trade and how it shaped the towns and villages we passed through. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and I enjoyed listening as she recounted her adventures in the Cotswolds.
As I approached the village of Stow-on-the-Wold, I couldn't resist stopping at one of the traditional tea rooms for a slice of homemade cake—my reward for the day’s wanderings!
