As I walked along the riverbank, I spotted lovely stone cottages, each with unique characteristics, many dating back to the 17th century. The honey-coloured limestone used in their construction glowed warmly in the afternoon sun. I took a moment to chat with a local artist who was sketching the scene. She shared her fascination with the history of the area and pointed out some hidden gems in the village, like the small model village that replicates Bourton-on-the-Water as it appeared in the 1930s.
Continuing my walk, I ventured out into the countryside along a well-marked footpath. The fields were lush and green, dotted with sheep lazily grazing—a quintessentially English scene. I passed through a few more quaint villages, including Lower Slaughter and Upper Slaughter, which are connected by a scenic path along the River Eye. The names themselves evoke a sense of history and intrigue, and the local lore about their origins made for an interesting conversation with a fellow walker I met on the way.
In Lower Slaughter, I paused to admire the Old Mill, which has been beautifully preserved and now houses a small museum. The information boards provided insights into the area's industrial past and how the river powered various mills.
