As I strolled along the banks of the River Windrush, I admired the arched stone bridges and the traditional cottages that lined the waterway. The sound of the flowing river was soothing, and I took a moment to sit by the water's edge to absorb the tranquil atmosphere. Along the way, I spotted several ducks and swans gliding gracefully across the surface, which added to the idyllic scene.
Continuing on my path, I passed through lush green fields dotted with sheep. I was reminded of how the Cotswolds has a rich agricultural history, and I appreciated the craftsmanship that has gone into maintaining the landscape. I bumped into a local farmer who was tending to his flock. We chatted for a bit about the challenges of farming and the importance of preserving traditional practices in this beautiful area.
As I ventured further, I explored the village of Lower Slaughter, which is even smaller and even more picturesque. The word "slaughter" actually comes from the Old English term for "wet land," and the name reflects the landscape rather than anything sinister. I took some time to photograph the beautiful old mill there, which dates back to the 19th century.
On my return to Bourton, I spotted a small art gallery. I decided to pop in and was lucky enough to meet the owner, an artist who specializes in landscapes. She shared stories of how the stunning surroundings inspire her work and even pointed out some local spots that I hadn’t yet explored.
