As I set off from Eastbourne, I was greeted by the sight of the iconic chalk cliffs of Beachy Head. The dramatic white cliffs were breathtaking, and the way the sunlight glinted off the sea made for some truly picturesque views. I took a moment to stop and enjoy the scenery, watching a few brave souls paragliding off the cliffs.
As I ventured further inland, the landscape transformed into rolling hills dotted with wildflowers and sheep. The lush green fields and the sound of chirping birds created a peaceful atmosphere. I took a break on a grassy knoll, where I met a couple of fellow walkers—an older gentleman who had been walking the South Downs for years and a young woman studying environmental science. We chatted about the history of the area, including the ancient long barrows that dot the hills, evidence of the Neolithic people who once inhabited this landscape.
Continuing along the path, I saw the historic village of Alfriston nestled in the valley. Its charming cottages and the old church of St. Andrew, with its unique round tower, caught my eye. I stopped to explore, and I couldn’t resist popping into a quaint tea room for a slice of homemade cake and a cup of tea. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and I ended up chatting with the owner about the village’s history and its connections to the famous writer Virginia Woolf, who spent time in the area.
As I wrapped up my walk, the golden hour sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the hills. It was a perfect end to a lovely day spent in nature, meeting interesting people, and soaking in the rich history of the South Downs. I can’t wait for my next adventure!
