As I wandered along the river, I was captivated by the quaint stone cottages with their honey-coloured stones glowing in the afternoon sun. The local shops selling handmade crafts and delicious treats added to the vibrant atmosphere. I stopped at a small café where I chatted with a friendly local named Margaret, who shared stories of the village's history and its significance during the wool trade in medieval times. She recounted how many of the buildings were originally constructed from the wealth generated by the wool industry.
Continuing my walk, I followed the Cotswold Way, a long-distance trail that stretches over 100 miles. The path took me through fields dotted with sheep, and I was lucky enough to spot a few lambs frolicking about. The views from the hilltops were breathtaking, with the rolling hills stretching as far as the eye could see, showcasing the patchwork of greens and golds from the fields below.
At one point, I came across a group of hikers. We struck up a conversation, and they were on a walking holiday from London, eager to explore the area. We exchanged tips on where to visit next, and they recommended the enchanting village of Castle Combe.
As I made my way back to Bourton, the sunset painted the sky in hues of pink and orange, casting a magical glow over the landscape. I felt so fortunate to experience the beauty of the Cotswolds and to connect with the people and stories that make this area so special. It was a reminder of how history is not just found in books but also in the landscapes and lives surrounding us.
